A Leash By Any Other Name

Most campgrounds require you to put your dog on a leash. But, recently it seems like half the dog owners ignore this rule most of the time. This is patently unfair to the rest of us.

For example, at a campground in Ohio, we were camped next to two large Great Danes. The owners didn't put them on the leash the entire time they were there. Here is their unleashed photo...

As you can see, unleashed with no owner in sight. In addition, they took both of these dogs walking without leashes. This made it very difficult for me, because one of my dogs is a dominant female and she doesn't appreciate other dogs walking up to me. So, I had to wait until the owners tok these dogs inside, so that I could take my dogs out.

Additionally, some people are just plain scared of dogs. It just isn't very nice to walk large dogs around without leashes. But, most importantly, it shows a blatant disregard for campground rules. This only serves as a bad example fr the rest of us. It gives people a legitimate excuse for asking the owners to limit dogs at campgrounds.

PLEASE, if the campground asks you to leash your dog, do it. Not just some of the time, but all of the time!!

Did you try talking to the park managers? Loose uncontrolled dogs are a danger! My dog is always on a leash, he is large and dominant. We can walk past tied dogs, leashed dogs and he barely turns his head. But a loose dog comming at us - we have no chance! IF I turn and go the other way, the loose dog follows... while the ignorant owners stand and call to their dog & say, don't worry, he's friendly! As this 'friendly' dog yaps and makes charges at my dog, who is getting more and more worked up - then I end up getting bit and the ignorant owners finally pick up their 'friendly' dog! Never an appology. I got bit this morning and it is not the first time. Each time I say it is the last time! All parks have rules that the dog must be on a leash, every state I have been to has a law that the dog must be on a leash and under the owners control at all times, but still, every day I see dogs running loose at parks all the time.

Dispelling a myth: I have not seen a any state enact a STATE-WIDE leash law, I don't such a thing exist, nor will ever. Farmers, Ranchers, hunters would have to leash their working animals; I believe leash laws are left up to communities, and I do see some Counties and park services getting involved, but, NO states have a state-wide leash law. I may keep my dog on a leash in the park, but, I head to a wooded area for free range play.

Note: leash laws are not for human protection, they are for animal protection. A leash will not keep a mean person from letting his dog bite you, the leash does nothing. Every dog should be under voice control, then they are even better under leash control. My dog and I were attacked 3 times by the same pit pull that broke his leash, in a park, the issue is not the leash or the dog, but, the owner, and no leash law was able to change the owner. I see lots of owners that keep their violent Schnauzers and Terriers on a leash while walking, but, still, they have allowed these dogs to become violent, threatening, and barking out of control, NO leash law made them better owners and better dog managers.

I am no expert, but, my last 3 rottweilers have all been voice controlled, obedient, non-barking (i wish I had left a little bit of barking in them) and protective, only on my command, they don't even cross a street without permission or get petting from a strange person without first getting permission from me, they ignore other dogs and people for the most part, unless we are at a dog park and I give permission. It seemed easy to train them, and it was my responsibility because I was going to travel from park to park, lots of love and approval for the good things, they respond. Darn, if I can do this with a 100 pound Roty, then those Schnauzer owners certainly can do the same, but, they seem to think the leash is all the training a dog needs.

I would encourage people to not be concerned with leash laws or rules, but, be critical of bad dogs and owners, especially owners, no leash is going to keep a dog off your butt if the owner dose not care.
